Easter in Jotunheimen
In 1901 the owner of Bessheim, Iver Storvik received 100 NOK from The Association for the Promotion of Skiing for keeping his lodge open during Easter. Since then the family have received ski-loving Easter holidaymakers every years. Easter at Bessheim is skitrips, lots of good food, Iver the reindeer, beer in the snow, lectures (in Norwegian), campfires, childrens ski races, guided trips and party on Easter evening.
Easter 2021 starts Friday March 26 th and lasts until Easter Monday April 5 th .
From we open in February to end of Easter we prepare many kilometres of cross-country skitrails in Sjodalen, connecting Bessheim to Besseggen Fjellpark, Hindseter and Gjendesheim.

Tuesday March 30th – dinner buffet with a visit from the wine-importer Bertil&Martens
Dinner buffet local tastes and tranching of lamb. Desserttable. The local wine-importer Bertil&Martens from Otta presents a selection of their wines during the meal. You can go to dinner any time between 18:30 and 20:30 Dinner is NOK 440. Children 3 – 12 years half price. Wines are paid for separately. Remember to make reservations.
Wednesday March 31th – lecture on the painter Kristen Holbø (in Norwegian)
Anne Holbø Wendelbo holds a lecture on her grandfather, the painter Kristen Holbø (1869-1953). He grew up in Vågå. Hjalmar Hjalke wrote before an exhibition in Stockholm in 1940: “Already from youth there was the mountains that interested Kristen Holbø the most, and he has painted them through all years and searched for their soul. He is the mountain!” Anne holds a phd in art history on Kristen Holbø. By the fireplace 20:30
Thursday April 1st – familytrip with a visit from the reindeers
The reindeer herders Jørn Slettom og Ola Vaagaasarøygard are joined by their favourite reindeers Iver and Nils by a campfire burning not a long way from Bessheim. They will tel you about
reindeer, how they are herded and the local reindeer-business. You can even try your skills at lasso. Suitable for both kids and adults. Meet in the reception at 11:00.
Thursday April 1st – lecture by Arne Brimi (in Norwegian)
Known chef Arne Brimi holds a lecture on his life as a chef in Jotunheimen and his food-philosophy. Bessheim was the first kitchen he worked in, and that set him on the course to be the first
Norwegian chef to participate in Bocuse D’Or in Lyon in 1987. Today he runs his own place,Vianvang, and is often seen at Brimibue in Lom. By the fireplace 20:30.
Good Friday April 2 – the glacier trip – long and rewarding skitrip through Jotunheimen
On Good Friday Jon Sjurgard will guide you on “the glacier trip”, a classic when staying at Bessheim. In the early days of Bessheim this was a popular trip, and following up on their tradition we serve you the “kings drink” – champagne and cognac – upon return. We will ski 50 km and 1550 vertcical meters. Starting at Bessheim we go up to Bessvatnet, down to Russvatnet to Blåtjønnodden. From here to Blåtjønnholet and then Styggebrean. Up Styggebrean to the highest point of the day, Styggehøbreskardet at 2130 MASL. Possibiity for detour to Søre Veotinden. Onwards down the whole Memurudalen to Memurubu. Across Gjende to Gjendeseheim and over the hill to Bessheim. This is not everyones trip, but if you are in good shape and used to many hours skiing outdoors you should not miss this opportunity. Gearlist: wool underwear, windproof outer clothing, down jacket with hood, wool mittens with windproof cover, windproof and warm hat, sunglasses, enough to drink (3 liters), large packed lunch, mountain back country skis with skins, and something to sit on. Jon is a very experienced mountaineer and knows Jotunheimen as his own back pocket. The trip is dependent on weather and strong ice on Gjende. Price per person: NOK 800. Make a reservation by April 1st on phone or email.

Saturday April 3 – 11:00-14:00– Ride a sledge with reindeer
The reindeer herders Jørn Slettom og Ola Vaagaasarøygard are joined by their favourite reindeers Iver and Nils, and you can ride a sledge behind a reindeer on the lake. Suitable for children! Meet up when it suits you between 11:00 and 14:00. NOK 100 per person.
Saturday April 3, 13:00– Childrens easter ski race
We hold our annual easter ski race and skijump-comptetion! You can get your face painted from 12:00. We encourage everyone to dress up in costumes, but you are welcome however you are! We grill hotdogs and serve juice. Sign up in the reception by 11:00
Saturday April 3, 19:00 – Easter evening
We serve a three-course dinner at 19:00. Dinner and party if you don’t have half pension is NOK 480 per person. Children 3 – 12 years half price. Make reservations in the receptions, on phone +47 61 23 89 13 or on email firstname.lastname@example.org by 22:00 the night before.
Ice fishing is a popular activity during easter. The most popular places are Øvre (Upper) and Nedre (Lower) SJodalsvatn, Gjendeosen and Nedre (Lower) Leirungen. All these lakes have great mountain trout waiting for you. You need to bring your own gear. Guided skiing with Gjendeguiden
Gjendeguiden, a local group of mountain guides, is a great way to get to places you don’t feel comfortable going on your own. They have broad experience in many outdoor activities and know our surroundings like their back pocket. Dog sledge riding during easter
At Sjodalen Hyttetun, 18 km north of Bessheim you can ride a dog sledge during the first weekend of easter, Thursday, Good Friday, 1. and 2. Easter day. See their English webpages for www.sjodalenhyttetun.no for details.
